Brooklyn Garden Wedding

Camille + Jonathan's beautiful Brooklyn Wedding took place in a rustic and charming restaurant with the ceremony and dinner in a lovely garden. The weather was perfect and the personal details the couple poured into their wedding really made all the difference. They incorporated flowers they grew in their garden with locally grown flowers into the centerpieces and bouquets they created. The couple made the delicious wedding favors by hand including; lemon curd, sweet and spicy sauce, pesto and peach vodka! This intimate Brooklyn Wedding was so much fun and we are delighted to have been a part of their special day!

The Kindness of Strangers

Nearly a month ago I reached out to every wedding vendor I know to help support a friend who is battling cancer and planning her wedding and the amount of support we received was tremendous. Cherise is not only my best friend but she is also a kind, caring, warm and strong woman. Cherise and Erik were engaged at Disneyland on August 15th 2012 and they could not be happier, he popped the question right in front of Sleeping Beauties castle and after many tears of happiness she said YES!

Only five months later she was rushed to the ER as she could not breathe and life as she knew it changed as she found out she had stage four non-hodgkins lymphoma. She began chemotherapy right away and ended up in the ICU after the chemo caused her lungs to collapse. She was put on a ventilator and chest tubes were inserted into each lung to drain fluid in order to keep her breathing. While in the ICU, her kidneys failed, which put her on dialysis for 6 weeks.  She stayed on the ventilator for 3 weeks and in the ICU for 5 weeks. Her fiance Erik and her amazing mother and sisters stayed by her side through the whole thing. Because she was in the ICU and immobile for so long, she lost all muscle mass in her legs and developed neuropathy and myopathy. She had to learn how to walk again. For the past five years Cherise has also volunteered with Relay for Life and served on the events committee and over the years she and her family have helped raise at least half a million dollars, this past race Cherise was not an organizer but a participant.

After 8 rounds of chemotherapy, she took some scans where they found some residual Lymphoma left, this meant the battle was not over. I flew back out to California to be by her side in the hospital as she underwent her second cycle of chemotherapy. Planning her wedding was the main source of joy and hope for Cherise and as a wedding planner and her best friend I wanted to make sure she had the wedding of her dreams! Having been in and out of the hospital and unable to work for more than a year her budget was very small but I did not want that to stop her from having the wedding of her dreams!

In a matter of days Wedding Chicks posted about Cherise and her story on their Facebook page, Love Inc. posted her story on their website and my fabulous intern Alex also posted about Cherise on her Blog. Various wedding vendors across the country reached out to their friends and colleagues for support and the response has been incredible.

So far Cherise and Erik have received shoes for her and her bridal party donated by Chromatic Gallerie, Photography donated by Coeur De La Photography, flowers donated by Loop Event Arts, the wedding cake donated by Fizz Bakery, Day of Coordination donated by Jonathan Templeton Events, Custom wedding coat hangers by Delovely Details, Bridal accessories by Hushed Commotion and a donation by a wonderful couple for a large amount of money to put towards their wedding.

Cherise and Erik cannot express their gratitude enough for all of the kindness they have received. They had no idea that so many people they have never met would be moved by their story and help out in such amazing ways. I want to also THANK everyone who reached out and offered kind words, support and donations for the couples big day, you really have made a huge impact on them and their families. It just goes to show how many wonderful people are out there!

Marriage Equality makes me HAPPY!

Yesterdays rulings by the Supreme Court on DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and Proposition 8 were a huge victory for the gay community and the institution of marriage! I cannot tell you how moved I was when they announced that part of DOMA (the part that denies federal benefits to same-sex couples) was unconstitutional! Then shortly after they ruled that Proposition 8 ballot initiative (which defined marriage as a man and a woman) could not stand in the State of California! As a gay man and a gay wedding planner I am elated that the federal government ruled in favor of marriage equality ! Their ruling really proves that there is no law higher than love. Gay couples want and deserve the same thing as everyone else, the legal right to love one another, and little by little it is happening. I cannot wait to plan more gay weddings and watch more and more couples begin their journeys of love which is now legitimized by the government.

These photos really capture the simple yet powerful meaning behind the mantra "LOVE IS LOVE"  Whether it is same-sex or opposite sex weddings I love what I do because I help to create one of the happiest and most memorable days in couples lives! Yesterdays rulings were a step in the right direction but we have to keep the momentum high and help make marriage equality possible in all 50 states! Currently 13 states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriage so we have much work to do!

NYC Red Velvet Cupcake Tour!

I am working with a wonderful bride who lives in California and she has asked me to taste red velvet cupcakes on her behalf. Naturally I happily accepted the task to try and find the best red velvet cupcake in New York City! I spent Sunday traveling all over Manhattan and visited three top cupcakeries in the city! Below are the photos and notes of my tasting, Enjoy!

Amy's Bread

Overall I thought that their cupcake was good. It was topped with a butter-cream frosting rather than the typical cream cheese frosting. The cupcake was a tad dry and heavy for my liking. The overall presentation was fantastic, the frosting sat perfectly on the cupcake topped with an adorable heart. This was my second favorite red velvet cupcake.

Sprinkles Cupcakes

Overall I thought this cupcake was great. It was topped with the classic cream cheese frosting. The cupcake was very moist and the overall presentation was stunning! The  frosting wrapped the top of the cupcake and was topped with their classic button. This was my favorite red velvet cupcake!

Magnolia Bakery

Overall I thought this cupcake was just ok. This cupcake was topped with whipped vanilla icing, which was very light and not what I expected. There is so much hype surrounding this cupcakerie but honestly the cupcake was very airy, light and almost tasted stale. The frosting has a classic look to it but it did not have any topper or additional flair. This was my least favorite red velvet cupcake.

*all photos from my iPhone* There are many cupcakeries I wanted to try but only had time for three in Manhattan. I purchased all cupcakes, and opinions are my own.
